Texture from Textile Vol. 2 | Garments of Time: Taiga Takahashi Vintage Collection
HOSOO GALLERY
December 3, 2022 to March 12, 2023
As a project linked to the solo exhibition at Ryosokuin, the collection of early 1900s clothing material that Takahashi had gathered was shown at HOSOO GALLERY.
In 2022, HOSOO GALLERY launched an ongoing research project called "Texture from Textile" together with the architect Naohisa Hosoo. Under the theme of "from textile to architecture," it traces the changes in thinking around craft, art, design, and architecture, starting from textile, or texture, and going back as far as the first half of the 20th century. This exhibition was the second part of the series.

On display were garments made in Britain, France, and the United States from the 1910s through the 1960s. Takahashi began collecting these in his teenage years through antique dealers, and the collection eventually reached about 2,000 pieces. By showing the clothing material he left behind, the exhibition traced the line of thought followed by a rising designer. At the same time, it revisited the theme carried over from Vol. 1, "the change in how people felt about ornamentation during the 20th century," now seen through the lens of clothing.
